The quaint village of Palmela is a half hour drive south from Lisbon and is in the heart of one of Portugal's
richest wine growing areas at the edge of the Arrábida mountain range. It centres around a 12thC fortified
castle high on a hill from where impressive views of the surrounding plains and national park extend to
Libson on a good day. Adjoining the castle, the old cloisters and beautiful architecture of a converted
convent have been cleverly integrated to create one of the finest Pousadas. Spacious bedrooms are
air conditioned and there is a good restaurant where menus feature traditional Portuguese dishes and

Europe's least visited capital cities despite being one of the most impressive. It's bursting with things to see and
is easy to navigate on foot even with its famous 7 hills, so allow yourself plenty of time to discover and delight in
all its treasures. One of the city's 2 Pousadas, the luxurious Palace Lisboa is in the old Alto de Sto Amaro district
and has views over the river. Surrounded by parkland, its opulent interior is more like a stately home than a hotel
and is awash with fabulous works of art. It has an excellent spa as well as indoor and outdoor pools (June-Sept).
