Villafranca del Bierzo, a pleasant little town in interesting mountainous countryside, was a stopping
point on the Way of St James and still bears traces of medieval splendour - even now present day
pilgrims can be seen on foot, or bicycle, heading for Santiago. Built from stone and slate the Parador
is custom designed and has sleek and stylish elegance with the most contemporary of fittings and
finishing touches. Facilities include a large restaurant, cafeteria and comfortable bar lounge, plus an
outdoor pool (June-Sept). There is also a small spa pool and sauna, both of which are free of charge.

Once the Palace of the Dukes of Castile, Zamora is one of Spain's most beautiful Paradores and has

The lesser known region of Extremadura has no fewer than six UNESCO World Heritage sites, one of which is the
ancient Roman garrison town of Cáceres. Surrounded by protective walls, its cobbled historic centre is lined
with palaces, mansions and churches where almost every turret and spire is home to an enormous stork's
nest, a common sight in this area. Once a 15thC Renaissance Palace, the Parador is fabulously located in
the old quarter so everything is on the doorstep. Renovated to create traditional yet modern accommodation
it retains some lovely original features that enhance its personality. It has a cafeteria / bar as well as a good

Founded by the Romans in 23BC Mérida is one of the most historic cities in Spain, and has many
monuments, sculptures and Roman remains, including the theatre, circus and amphitheatre. The
Parador is a former convent in a quiet square near the town centre and has its own collection of
antiquities in the 'Jardin de Antigüedades' as well as more modern facilities including air conditioned
