Right on the Spanish border and with easy road access, the tiny Basque village of Biriatou is a real
hidden gem. Perched on the side of a hill it has fabulous views over the Bidassoa valley and is the
starting point for many marked walking trails. Hendaye, with its lovely beach and resort centre, is just a
short drive - a free shuttle runs from the village in July and August - or cross the border into Spain and

Elegant and charming Libourne with its gently flowing river, grand market square and wide, shady
avenues is a fine example of a typical French town and is just a short drive west of its famous wine-producing
neighbour, St Emilion. It has excellent shopping including a market three times a week and
some good restaurants and bistros, plus there are plenty of surrounding vineyards and châteaux to
explore of course. And an ideal base whilst you are doing all this is the Mercure - alongside the river it

The old Roman town of Périgueux with its impressive Byzantine cathedral lies on the banks of the Isle
river and is the capital of the Dordogne. It is a town of 2 parts and an easy walk around the centre takes
in all the main sights whilst twice weekly markets offer the very best in local produce. And you could
not be better placed to explore this historic town than at the Ibis. Right in the centre, it's alongside the
river and close to the cathedral. You can relax in the bar or on the terrace before dining in the lovely
restaurant and then enjoy a comfortable night in an air conditioned bedroom complete with en suite
shower / wc. Hotel parking is limited but there is free public parking nearby.
