Picture-postcard Azay le Rideau is the ideal start point for setting out on the châteaux trail. And those
staying at this aptly named hotel are especially fortunate as one of the loveliest - the Renaissance-turreted
Château d'Azay le Rideau - is a short downhill walk. An impressive restoration programme of
the façade has recently been completed and inside some of the rooms have also had refurbishment.
Addionally audio guides are now available for visitors. And once you've visited this one there are a
further 4 chateaux within a 12k radius! In an ideal location on the outskirts of town, this friendly hotel
has a good reputation for its cuisine and with plenty of free parking and pleasant bedrooms, represents
good value for money.

The lovely little town of Bléré is one of the Loire's best kept secrets and is an absolutely ideal place
to stay when visiting the region and its splendid châteaux. You can walk alongside the river or around
the War Memorial gardens, all gorgeously adorned with flowers in season, and there is a fascinating
renovated windmill that is open to the public at weekends. On the main square, the Cheval Blanc
is the town's only hotel and its 9 refurbished bedrooms each have their own charm and style. The
guest lounge opens out onto a delightful patio and there is a small outdoor heated pool (Apr-Sept) in
the walled garden behind the car park. It also has a fabulous restaurant that is fast gaining a good
reputation.

Alongside the river Blois is an excellent base for visiting the region's impressive châteaux. Narrow sloping
streets cluster around its own château in the historic centre which is compact and easy to navigate -
the tourist office can supply maps of marked walking trails which take in all the things of interest to
see. Don’t miss the extraordinary Maison de la Magie, a museum of magic and illusion. It's a fantastic
experience for all ages and includes a half hourly show where a 6 headed dragon appears at the windows!

Once the kennels for the king's hunting dogs, this 17thC country house and its extension is now a
luxury hotel on the private estate of the Château de Chambord. You can buy tickets from reception as
well as hire normal or electric bicycles which is a great way to enjoy the many marked trails around
the park. The hotel has pleasant public areas furnished with impressive artwork and vintage prints, a
good restaurant, albeit a little expensive (booking essential) with a summer terrace and views of the
castle plus a charming bar where you can try the local renowned raspberry liqueur. Additionally there
are tennis courts and a small spa.
There is a supplement of £10 per double room per night to stay on Sat between
5 / 4-31 / 5, 1 / 10-31 / 10 & 26 / 12-31 / 12 and £15 at all other times.
