This is a tour of contrasts taking in the varied scenery of
France’s Atlantic coast and some of its beautiful islands
which can all be reached by bridge. See the saltmarshes
where high quality sea salt is cultivated, nature reserves
with their wealth of birdlife, unspoilt long sandy beaches, the
resort of St Jean de Monts which comes alive in the summer
months and the fabulous old harbour in La Rochelle. Each
island has its own special charm – Ile d’Oléron is France’s
capital of oysters and Ile de Ré is reputed to have the same
hours of sunshine as the Côte d’Azur. Rochefort has a great
maritime history and is where ropes for the navy were made
in the magnificent 17th century Corderie Royale
(royal ropeworks).

Castles, caves, stunning landscapes and a rich history
make this one of the most exceptional areas of France
and this tour takes you to the heart of it. Within this region
the Vézère valley has a wealth of prehistoric sites with
painted or engraved caves, in particular a series of 15 listed
as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Lascaux cave, the finest
example, is closed to preserve its condition but the Lascaux
II replica was recreated in meticulous detail - a must-see
for visitors.
Hautefort, Marqueyssac, Milandes, Castelnaud and
Beynac all have superb châteaux, each with their own
story to discover. With Roman origins and an abundance
of architectural treasures Périgueux is a City of Art and
History, with a vibrant atmosphere. Sarlat is one of
the most picturesque Dordogne towns, with medieval
golden stone buildings and a famous covered market.
Passionately proud of its gourmet products, the region’s
specialities include foie gras, Périgord ‘black diamond’
truffles, caviar, mushrooms and walnuts (plus wines
of course). The itinerary also includes a night near the
beautiful city of Tours in the Loire valley.
