Caroline Greyl,
a captain on a mission
The CEO of the luxury hair care brand
Leonor Greyl is today tackling plastic
pollution in oceans head on. To drive
this commitment, she has given her
wholehearted support to The Sea Cleaners,
an association led by skipper Yvan
Bourgnon.
How did this commitment towards protecting the oceans
come about?
Caroline Greyl: I am going to tell you a personal story. Like
everyone I love going to the beach. But when I'm with my son,
I’ve never really been keen on building sand castles – I leave
that to my husband (laughter)! However, from a very young
age, I taught him to pick up any plastic waste he saw. This
is an issue that I’ve felt strongly about for a long time, both
personally AND professionally. Leonor Greyl products are
made from natural active ingredients either from plants or the
sea, therefore protecting the planet and ecosystems must be
at the top of our list of priorities.
What triggered you to give your support to the association
The Sea Cleaners?
CG: Meeting Yvan Bourgnon was instrumental to this decision.
This man has completed several transoceanic races, during
which he experienced the pollution in our waters first hand.
He opened my eyes to the extent of the problem – nearly nine
million tons of plastic are tipped into the sea each year, which
is 300 kilos per second! The ecological, economic and sanitary
implications of this are catastrophic. Yvan told me about The
Sea Cleaners project, which aims to tackle the exact area of
my concern. He seemed to be sincerely committed and his
sensibility and conviction touched me. And so I agreed to come
on board.
How else are you working to protect nature?
CG: Naturalness has been in the DNA of the brand since my
parents created it. Our mission is to design simple products
that respect hair, using preferably organic ingredients from
plants or seaweed. Satisfying this requirement is our core
focus. We then ensure – I was going to say ‘naturally’ – that
our containers and packaging are recyclable. Finally, we are
a patron of the association Un toit pour les abeilles (A roof
for the bees), which works to promote the reproduction of this
endangered species. In other words, we are actively trying to
make a difference at our level. If everyone did as much, I think
we would be moving in the right direction.
