Wild west
L’ouest sauvage
The Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland is a
great route for wildlife enthusiasts,
offering plenty of coastal vantage
points at which to pause and get the
binoculars out.
Dolphin and whale watching are
particularly popular pursuits, as there
are opportunities to spot these
beautiful creatures along the length of
this coast. In fact, almost a third of the
world’s species of cetaceans have been
recorded in Irish waters – that’s 25
species, 17 of which are visitors to the
coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way.
Among them are the harbour porpoise,
bottlenose dolphin, common dolphin,
Risso’s dolphin, fin whale, killer whale,
minke whale and humpback whale.
There are numerous locations to see
them: Mizen Head and Sheep’s Head in
Co Cork; Ballybunion Cliffs and
Brandon Point in Co Kerry; Kilkee Cliffs
in Co Clare; Killary Harbour in Co
Galway; Annagh Head in Co Mayo;
Malin Head, County Donegal
Aughris Head in Co Sligo; and Malin
Head and Sliabh Liag in Co Donegal.
Meanwhile, keen birdwatchers will
enjoy a stop at one of Ireland’s most-visited
attractions: the Cliffs of Moher,
which reach a lofty height of 214
metres and span eight kilometres of
the western seaboard of Co Clare. A
special protected area for birds, it
supports one of the largest mainland
seabird nesting colonies in Ireland:
peregrines and fulmars all year long
but also puffins, kittiwakes, guillemots
and razorbills in springtime. To enjoy
the inspiring panoramas, it’s best to
arrive early or late in the day if
possible, when there are fewer visitors.
Whether you are a lover of flora or
fauna, the incredible views all along
the Wild Atlantic Way are sure to call
you back time and again. The shifting
light and dramatic skies make each
journey in Ireland unique and
wonderful.
