Courses in Brittany
Golf Club des Ormes, Dol de Bretagne
Ref: FGB001, 18 holes - Par 72, 6344yds
A championship golf course set in a 370 acre estate surrounding a 16th century château and including a family
friendly resort with campsite, hotel, log cabins and even tree houses (look out for them as you play a round).
The clubhouse, originally a farm building, retains the original beams and fireplace, but if the sun’s out you
simply must drink and dine alfresco, and maybe even take a dip in the outdoor pool to cool off. The course is
not that long, but quite tight, and the greens are just a joy.
The holes around the imposing château are the highlight,
particularly the 10th, where you must first thread your ball
through an avenue of apple trees and then over a lake
guarding the green. This is an ideal course for a family or
group of friends looking to combine golf with relaxation and
sightseeing, as fairytale Mont St Michel is nearby, so too
the castle at Combourg, while Dol de Bretagne is great for
pottering round the market or simply shooting the breeze in
the pavement cafés.
Our opinion:
A wonderful complex which has a hotel, superb facilities
and a great course. Favourite Hole: 10th.
Golf de la Freslonnière, Rennes - Le Rheu
Ref: FGB013, 18 holes - Par 72, 5657yds
Freslonnière was opened in 1989 and designed by
Alain du Bouexic. It has all the following facilities -
2 practice areas, approach area, putting green, plus
pitch & putt - and is a high-class parkland course
beautifully lined with trees making it well sheltered
from the wind. It’s not a long course, but difficult
with many water hazards, tight dog-legs and
narrow fairways. The clubhouse restaurant is highly
recommended - under an hour from St Malo.
Our opinion:
In some places you will need to walk single
file as the fairways are so narrow. Good for
the short accurate player.
Favourite Hole: 8th.
Designed by Yves Bureau and built on agricultural
land, the Quéven-Lorient course runs alongside the
river Scorff, skirting woods and crossing valleys
and is only minutes away from Lorient town.
It is a hilly course, with a great variety of holes,
featuring several dog-legs with well-positioned
water hazards. The greens are in very good shape
and there are some unusual hazards including a
tumulas which is a mound of earth and stones
raised over a prehistoric grave. The clubhouse is
warm and welcoming and has panoramic views.
Our opinion:
A good challenge with the back 9 wrapped
around outside the front 9. Worth a visit.
Favourite Hole: 13th.

Golf de St Laurent, Carnac - Ploemel
Ref: FGB010, 18 holes - Par 72, 6701yds 9 holes - Par 35, 2959yds
This Michel Fenn design, ranked as one of France’s
top 40, is a superb championship course which is
very well maintained and has been the venue of
the French Professional Championships in ‘88 and
‘89 along with the National Open in ‘95. Tree-lined
fairways, lakes and quick greens make for a superb
challenge and you can warm up on 9 holes before
tackling the championship course. After your round
a modern clubhouse awaits you.
Our opinion:
A championship venue not to be missed.
Favourite Hole: 6th.
In southern Brittany, not far from the historic walled
town of Vannes, Baden is a relatively open and
generally forgiving golf course . The first hole takes
you down to an inlet of the Auray river, with boats
bobbing on their moorings behind a green that is
typically large and welcoming. There’s gorse and
frequent water hazards, but don’t be deterred because
this is an attractive course suitable for high to low
handicap players. Baden is a good walking course,
although the subtle changes in elevation keep it
interesting. You finish on a par 5 and a birdie chance.
Our opinion:
This course which is a cross between heathland and
parkland is a top class course with superb views
over the river Auray. A good challenge for all golfers.
Favourite Hole: 13th.
